A much loved community member. The golden leaves fall off all at once in fall. This is a female Ginkgo, which also bears fruit in late autumn. The sidewalk underneath is avoided then.
When the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945, six Gingko trees were among the few living things to survive within a short radius of the blast site—and they’re still standing today. Thus, the Japanese regard the gingko as “the bearer of hope.” It is also known as “the survivor” and “the living fossil.”
In 2011, the Green Legacy Hiroshima Foundation began distributing seeds from these surviving trees around the world as symbols of peace and hope.
