Landmark trees are distinctive, often ancient or unusually large trees that stand out in their environment due to their size, shape, age, cultural significance, or historical associations. These trees serve as natural points of reference and are often deeply connected to the identity of a place, acting as living witnesses to history and community life.
Charlottesville Tree Stewards have identified the most outstanding Notable Trees as Landmark Trees. Some are memorial trees, and some are protected by the Charlottesville Tree Commission as Heritage Trees. Whether naturally occurring or intentionally planted, landmark trees inspire a sense of permanence and connection between people and nature. They are beloved by the community.
