Common Name: White Walnut

Latin Name: Juglans cinerea

Address: 707 Avon Street

GPS Coordinates: 38.02442, -78.47965

This native tree is in the front yard of a newly renovated home. A neighbor says  the tree is at least 50 years old.

White Walnuts are also known as butternuts, and are edible. The owner of the house enjoys collecting the lemon-shaped nuts in the fall. Butternuts also have many traditional uses, including for prized wood, various medicines, and yellow dyes. Some say the distinctive bark looks like ski trails. Butternuts do not tolerate shade, and are often seen growing near water.

There is a fungal disease (the butternut canker) that is threatening butternuts throughout its range, so they are rare in Charlottesville. Drive down Avon Street and get a good look at this special tree.
